News from around the web

Hitting today is the new trailer for the James Gunn directed The Suicide Squad which gives a new and refreshing take on the comic book villain series.

The 2016 version of the source material directed by David Ayer was an interesting and enjoyable, but ultimately flawed, version of the ani-heroes that came out in the midst of the Zack Snyder take on the DC Universe.

That time has passed, and the DC Universe has largely moved on and now James Gunn, who brought us the Marvel Cinematic Universe The Guardians of the Galaxy, takes on the misfit group headed up once again by Margot Robbie who reprises her role as Harley Quinn for a third time.

The comedy here seems slapstick, and the red band trailer hints that this might be a bit more adult than the 2016 take.

There is a hint of '80's action TV show here and I couldn't help but think of The A-Team or Knight Rider as I watched, but still its enjoyable if a bit childish at times.

A new poster (see below) has also been released which backs up this 80's TV show, or Grindhouse cinema, feel.

The Suicide Squad

The movie hits streaming and cinemas across the world with a release date of 6th August 2021 in the UK and USA.

Bad Boys For Life had a good run at the top of the US box office but its time for a change and this weekend Margot Robbie and her gang of trouble makers hit the top in Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn).

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn)

Makings its debut at the top of the US box office the spiritual follow-up to Suicide Squad with Harley Quinn leading the way as she joins up with the Birds Of Prey to down a Billionaire criminal.

The film took $33.2 Million over the weekend which is perhaps a little lower than was expected, and if lower than Suicide Squad and Joker from last year.

Bad Boys For Life

After 3 weeks at the top the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence buddy cop movie falls to number 2 this week with $12 Million.

The film now has a total gross of $166.3 million and although not as good as your average superhero movie is far better than anyone could have expected from the movie.

The award darling war movie (altohugh it didn't get the Oscar) falls to number 3 this weekend with $9 Million pushing its total gross after 7 weeks of release to $132.5 Million.

Robert Downey Jr. screen adaptation of the classic novel falls to number 4 this weekend with $6.6 pushing the film to $63.9 Million after 4 weeks.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Dwayne Johnson and his gang trapped in a video game falls to number 5 this week with $5.5 Million giving the film a 9 week total of $298.4 Million, it should pass $300 Million by next weekend.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

The Sci-Fi space opera falls to number 10 this weekend but it does have the highest total gross on the chart with $510.5 Million from 8 weeks of release.

The South Korean movie has been in cinemas in the US now for 18 weeks, and altohugh they have not all been on the top 15 it does have the longest run of films inside the top 15.

The movie was the Oscar darling this year winning both best director and best movie which will bring a new audience to the movie and we could see the film around for a bit longer to come.

The Margot Robbie vehicle Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) makes its debut at the world box office at the top ending the run of Bad Boys For Life which falls to number 2.

Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn)

Not a sequel to Suicide Squad but the film does feature Margot Robbie as the character of Harley Quinn, the DC movie enters the global box office with $81.2 Million from 79 countries.

This is far lower than expected, and lower than recent R rated movies in similar genres, despite the acceptable reviews and good audience score the film could up up a bit of a flop.

Bad Boys For Life

After spending 3 weeks at the top the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence buddy cop movie falls to number 2 this week with $27.8 million from 64 countries.

The movie has now taken $336.3 Million and has turned into a big hit for the franchise.

Despite the terrible reviews the Robert Downey Jr. film has turned into a sizeable hit and takes $25.4 Milion from 66 counties giving the film a total of $158.6 Million after 5 weeks of release

Sam Mendes highly acclaimed war movie falls to number 4 this weekend with a gross of $24.2 Million from 53 countries giving it a total of $287.3 Million after 5 weeks of release.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Jumanji: The Next Level

Dwayne Johnson and gang fall to number 5 this week with $8.8 Million from 59 countries making an amazing total of $767.4 Million after 10 weeks of release.

Not a sequel to Suicide Squad but certainly in the same universe Birds Of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) is given a 15 age rating by the BBFC in the UK.

Birds Of Prey 15 Certificate

Starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn the film follows the further adventures and misadventures of the DC villain who is the former girlfriend of Joker.

Directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs 2018) this is her first major feature, the movie also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ewan McGregor.

The film has been given its 15 age rating for strong violence, injury detail, language, sexual threat and it has a runtime of 109 minutes 1 hour 49 minutes) and the movie was passed uncut.

The movie is release on 7th February 2020.

BBFC movie info page

There were three new entries at the top of this weeks UK box office in the shape of Venom, A Star Is Born and Johnny English Strikes Again, but it was Sony's Villain Hero film which took top honors.

Johnny English Strikes Again

The Tom Hardy starring film dominated what was a busy weekend at the UK box office with an £8 million debut which is good for a Marvel movie in the Spider-Man universe, and only a million off that of Spider-Man Homecoming from last year.

This of course is not from the MCU despite leaning heavily on the look and feel of a typical Marvel film, but as with Suicide Squad from last year this proves that villains can hold their own in a movie despite poor reviews.

Johnny English Stikes Again

The third in the Johnny English series of film and it looks like the Rowan Atkinson starring James Bond Spoof has lost none of its appeal as it makes its debut with £4.1 million which is in the same ball park as the other 2.

Both the other 2 films went on to make in the £20 million region and we would expect this one to do very similar business as its appealing to the same audience, this film has got less favourable reviews though.

A Star Is Born

It was a very fine margin but Johnny English just beat out A Star Is Born as the Bradley Cooper directed and starring film takes the third spot this week with a £4.1 million debut.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls

Three weeks on the box office now and the Jack Black starring film takes £900,00 over the weekend to boost its total UK gross to £6.8 million.

Night School

Taking a large tumble this week and finishing off the top 5 the Kevin Hart romantic comedy takes £860,000 to boost its 2 week UK gross to £3.1 million.

Incredibles 2

Having been on the box office for 13 weeks the Pixar animated comedy has taken an incredible £55.7 million making it the third highest grossing film of 2018.
