The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Producing a series best with a £14 million opening weekend Fast and Furious 8 tops the UK box office easily making more than the rest of the chart added together.

This is the first instalment without the late Paul Walker and many thought the series could not continue, but number 8 in the long running series has performed better then expected.

The £14 million opening makes it the 30th best opening ever in the UK ahead ofThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and behind Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith.

After a week at the top The Boss baby falls to number 2 with £3 million bringing the films total to a rather good £16.7 million after 2 weeks.

The Handmaiden is new at number 6 with £474,752 and The Sense of an Ending is new at 10 with £329,948.

Highest total grossing movie on the chart is Beauty and The Beast with £65 million, its now the 10th top film in the UK, and the longest running film is Logan with 7 weeks.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them stays at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend keeping off Allied which makes its debut at number 2.

With a second weekend gross of £8.8 million Fantastic Beasts has a brilliant second weekend which brings its total gross after 2 weekends of release to £30 million.

This result is actually keeping in line with the Harry Potter series, the latter films had far better first weekends but fell to roughly the same for the second weekend.

The potential for Beasts to go on and make similar to the early Potter films at least is quite high if it keeps on this trajectory.

Landing at 2 this week if the latest Brad Pitt starring film Allied, co starring Marion Cotillard and directed by Robert Zemeckis the drama takes £1.3 million on its debut.

For both Pitt and Zemeckis this is a fairly typical opening gross, although for both this is no where near their highest grossing debuts.

Also new this week is Bad Santa 2 at 4 with &poind;.7 million and very bad reviews, A United Kingdom at 6, Dear Zindagi at 9 and Paterson at 10.

Fantastic beasts this week becomes the top total grossing movie on the chart while Storks is the longest running film at 7 weeks.

JK Rowling unleashes her vision of the Wizarding World beyond the mega successful life of Harry Potter in the shape of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them which enters the top with great but not excellent opening weekend.

A £15 million debut is nothing to be sniffed at, and it is the 20 top opening in the UK ever, but only 2005's Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire scored a lower opening of the Potter series.

Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban from 2004 was the biggest Potter opening with £23.8 million on its debut and is the 3rd top opening ever in the UK.

Fantastic Beasts has some big shoes to fill and with the very favourable reviews it could be a long and slow burner, but in less than 4 weeks Star Wars does the same and expands its universe which will have a knock on effect.

Arrival entered the box office at number 1 last week and falls to number 2 this week with £1.5 million which brings its total to £5.7 million after 10 days of play, its should overtake Prisoners as director Denis Villeneuve top film.

Only one other new entry this week, Andre Rieu Christmas With Andre, and event cinema, at number 4, it took just over £1 million.

Bridget Jones's Baby was once again the longest running film on the chart at 10 weeks and the top total grossing move with £47 million.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 simply did big business across the world in 2011 taking an incredible $1,327,655,619 in world wide box office takings.

The final instalment of the Harry Potter franchise made sure that no other franchise will come close to it for a while and it was the only film in the saga to break the billion pound mark in world grosses, although the 3D tax will have helped.

Coming in a healthy second is Transformers: Dark of the Moon which took $1,114,558,779, this is also the highest grossing film it's series, although to date there are only 3, more will follow. With Transformers taking over a billion it completed a top 10 of world box office films with over a billion.

Also worth a mention are Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with just over a billion dollars, Kung Fu Panda with $659,230,261 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 with $648,079,401.

It was not a great year for film at the box office this year despite the high taking of 3 films, they were exceptions. Next year is a good year for films and could well see box office takings increase with the likes of Batman, Spider-Man and The Hobbit.
