News from around the web

The UK box office didn't get started in 2021 until 24th May so the summer season is the first season of the year to get any results from ticket sales after the last box office chart being 25th December 2020 and Wonder Woman 1984 topping that chart.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

The top movie of the summer got off to a flying start which was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and it took £4 Million the weekend cinemas re-opened.

The sequel movie directed by Will Gluck and starring James Corden as Peter was the top movie in the country for the first weekend audiences were allowed back into cinemas and it hung around for 12 weeks and has to date taken over £20 Million.

Black Widow

The much delayed Black Widow finally got a release on 23rd July 2021 and topped the box office for 3 weeks.

The movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh was on the UK top 15 for 15 weekend and has to date grossed over £18 Million and is the second top movie of 2021.

Fast & Furious 9

The Fast Saga was back this year with Fast & Furious 9 which was released at the end of June and topped the box office for a couple of weeks.

The movie has taken over £16 Million in the UK and is the third top movie of summer 2021.

The Suicide Squad

There was a lot of hype around the James Gunn adaptation of The Suicide Squad which was released in late July and topped the box office on its release and the following weekend.

A 6 week UK box office run saw it gross £13 Million and is the fourth top in the UK over the summer of 2021.

Free Guy

A bit of a sleeper hit was the fifth top movie of the summer as Ryan Reynolds Free Guy which topped the box office in mid August for 3 weeks and has taken over £13 Million so far.

The movie is still on the box office as we go into the autumn and only got knocked off the top of the UK box office this last weekend by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The top 10 movies of Summer 2021 looks like this.

  1. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - £20 Million
  2. Black Widow - £18.6 Million
  3. Fast & Furious 9 - £16.4 Million
  4. The Suicide Squad - £13.8 Million
  5. Free Guy - £13.2 Million
  6. Space Jam: A New Legacy - £12.2 Million
  7. Jungle Cruise - £11.7 Million
  8. A Quiet Place Part II - £11.5 Million
  9. Cruella - £9.44 Million
  10. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It - £9.4 Million

The James Gunn directed comic book action movie The Suicide Squad tops the US box office this week on its debut with a less than expected weekend gross.

Jungle Cruise fell to number 2 and with such a high profile new release there were no other new movies on the box office top 10 this weekend.

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 6th - 8th August 2021

The Suicide Squad

Director James Gunn jumps from the MCU to the DCEU to bring his interpretation of the comic book anti hero movie last brought to the screen by David Ayer in 2016.

The movie makes its debut a bit on the disappointing side even for the pandemic era with $26.5 Million on its debut.

Its unfair to compare to the 2016 version of the movie but that movie took $133.6 Million on its debut exactly 5 years ago.

Jungle Cruise

Disney's latest romp on the jungle falls from its debut position at the top to number 2 this weekend with $16.6 Million, a 54% tumble from last weekend.

This gives the Dwayne Johnson starring movie a $65.3 Million total on its second weekend of release.

Old

Staying at number 3 this weekend, and proving to be an audience draw is the M. Night Shyamalan directed movie which on its 3rd weekend brings in $4.14 Million, a slim 39% drop over last weeeknd.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $38.5 Million.

Black Widow

Remaining at number 4 this weekend is the Scarlett Johansson starring movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe which takes $4 Million this weekend, a slom 38% drop over last week.

The movie has been on the box office for 5 weeks now and has $175.3 Million total gross, the highest of 2021 so far.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Old (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Old (@1)
  • Longest run - A Quiet Place Part II (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - A Quiet Place Part II ($157.5 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown weekend 23rd - 25th July 2021

Old

The new movie from director M. Night Shyamalan makes its debut at the top of the US box office this weekend with a gross of $16.5 Million.

The famed directors top movie in America is still The Sixth Sense from 1999 and with the current pandemic and cinema closures it wont come anywhere near that, but his lowest grossing is The Lady In the Water at $42.2 Million and although a struggle it could come close to that!

Snake Eyes

The new movie from the G.I Joe series of movies is an origins film and comes in at number 2 with $13.3 Million.

This movie had a lot of hype and its perhaps a disappointment that it came in at number 2, but Old had good word of mouth and this movie got hit hard by the critics, and I dont think there was much of an appetite for it!

Black Widow

Falling to number 3 this weekend is the latest Marvel movie which this week takes $11.6 Million, 56% down from last weekend.

This gives the movie a 3 week total gross of $154.8 Million, and its the 3rd top grossing movie of 2021 in America but its maybe lower than expected, it has the pandemic to content with and it is also available on Disney+ with an extra fee, and it wont be long before its available without the extra fee, also Marvel are doing very well on Disney+ with WandaVision, The Falcom and The Winter Soldier and Loki all having been big hits.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

Falling to number 4 from the top this week is the Space Jam sequel which has a second weekend gross of $9.5 Million, a large 70% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total US gross of $51.3 Million and the prospect of disappearing out of the box office in the next couple of weeks, on a positive note it is the 8th top movie in America in 2021 so far.

Fast & Furious 9

The lastest The Fast Sage movie is sinking fast at the box office and this week takes $4.7 Million, 38% down from last weekend.

This gives the car movie a $163.3 Million total over 5 weeks of release, it is the top grossing movie in America of 2021 so far taking over from A Quiet Place Part II this weekend but this is most likely the last weekend in the top 5.

It may be 25 years after the original but sequel movie Space Jam: A New Legacy top the US box office on its debut weekend removing Black Widow after a single week at the top.

Elsewhere on the US box office chart Escape Room: Tournament of Champions makes its debut at 3 and Nicholas Cage stars in Pig which is new at 10 with $945,000.

US box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Space Jam: A New Legacy (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - Space Jam: A New Legacy (@1)
  • Longest run - A Quiet Place Part II (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - A Quiet Place Part II ($155 Million)

US box office top 5 breakdown 16th - 18th July 2021

Space Jam: A New Legacy

25 years after the original movie which starred Micheal Jordon as the pro basketball player in a toon world comes the sequel which replaces Jordan for LeBron James, and the movie its the top spot on its debut.

The movie took $31.6 Million on its debut, comparisons to the original movie are irrelevant considering we are still in a pandemic and it was 25 years ago but Spance Jam made its debut with $27.5 Million at he end of 1996.

Black Widow

The MCU return to box office last a week at the top (so far) as the Scarlett Johansson starring movie srop to number 2 with $26.2 Million, a 67% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $132 Million over 2 weekends and is the third top movie of 2021 in North America.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

Making its debut at number 3 this weekend is a sequel movie which has had little buzz, Escape Room was released in 2019 and took a decent $57 Million over its US run.

The Adam Robitel directed sequel makes its debut with $8.8 Million.

Fast & Furious 9

Falling to number 4 this weekend is The Fast Saga's latest instalment which takes $7.6 Million, a slim 20% drop from last weekend, for a total os $154.8 Million after 4 weeks, and the second top movie of 2021.

The Boss Baby 2

Animated movies have done well during the pandemic but this movie seems to have been overlooked by audiences as the sequel movie falls to 5 with a gross of $7.6 Million, a 30% drop, giving it $154.8 Million after 4 weeks of release.
