Spiral: From the Book of Saw No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema.

Adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas:

  • where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence
  • where material or treatment appears to us to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society. For example, the detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sadistic violence, rape or other non-consensual sexually violent behaviour
  • which make this violence look appealing; reinforce the suggestion that victims enjoy rape or other non-consensual sexually violent behaviour; or which invite viewer complicity in rape, other non-consensual sexually violent behaviour or other harmful violent activities
  • where there are more explicit images of sexual activity in the context of a sex work (see right) In the case of video works, which may be more accessible to younger viewers, intervention may be more frequent than for cinema films.

US box office top 5 breakdown 28th - 30th May 2021

A Quiet Place Part II

Sequel to the 2018 movie A Quiet Place director John Krasinski takes us on another journey in the post apoplectic where a slightest sound can cost you your life.

The movie takes an amazing $48.3 Million on its debut weekend which is only 5% lower that the fist movie, and as cinemas are still not 100% open across the country you can see why the studio wanted to delay the movie.

Excellent word of mouth will take this movie through the summer and it has already become not only the summer blockbuster to see this year but a horror classic.

Cruella

Disney release the Cruella De'vil origin movie on Disney+ premium as well as at theatres wich may have damaged its box office potential slightly.

Still the Emma Stone starring movie wakes a excellent $21.3 Million on its debut and enters the box office at number 2.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Spending 2 weeks at the top of the US box office the Saw sequel movie falls to number 3 this weekend.

A $2.2 Million gross is a 50% drop from last weekend and puts the movies total gross at $19.7 Million after 3 weeks of release.

Wrath of Man

The Jason Statham starring action movie falls to number 4 this weekend with $2.1 Million, a 28% drop, for a total gross of $22.1 Million after 4 weeks of release.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Spending yet another weekend in the top 5 the Disney animated tale is still taking nearly $2 Million a week at the box office, this is a 17% increase from last weekend.

The movie has now passed the $50 Million mark with a total gross of $50.8 Million after 14 weeks of release.

The much delayed Fast & Furios 9 made its debut in China this weekend and not only topped the box office there but was the biggest film of the weekend globally.

Also making a very strong first weekend on the box office is Love Will Tear Us Apart which makes its debut at number 2 this week.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Fast & Furious 9 (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Fast & Furious 9 (@1)
  • Longest run - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Cliff Walkers ($164.7 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown 21st - 23rd May 2021

Fast and Furious 9

As with most movies at the moment this is over a year late coming to cinemas, but as expected the latest episode in the Fast series makes a fantastic debut.

The movie takes a very impressive $162.3 Million over its debut weekend from just 8 countries.

Love Will Tear Us Apart

Also making its debut on the global box office is Chinese director Mo Sha's latest movie which takes $14.8 Million over the weekend from just 1 country.

The movie got a mid week release and has taken $30.3 Million since its debut.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

As cinemas start to open the sequel movie to Peter Rabbit has gone into more and countries and hence has been around for 9 weeks.

This week the movie is at 3 with $8.4 Million from 11 countries, a 70% increase from last weekend, and it has taken a global total of $30.2 Million.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

The horror franchise movie has been on the global box office for 2 weeks now and falls to 4 with $7.2 Million from 22 countries, down 40% from last weekend.

To date the movie has taken $22.5 Million globally.

Wrath of Man

Falling to number 2 this week is Guy Ritchies latest movie which takes $6.3 Million this weekend from 30 countries, 60% down, for a $65.7 Million total from 5 weeks.

This week cinemas in the UK came back to life and started showing movies again, and in a week where it feels like things have been re-set and every one of the top 15 films in basically a new entry Peter Rabbit 2 leads the way.

As a testement to how much cinema has been missed by the british public over the last 5 months this weeks box office is the highest since March of 2020 when cinemas started to close and despite the fact that a number of the movies on the chart are on streaming platforms they still managed to bring in decent numbers.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - The whole top 15!
  • Longest run - All movies on 1 week!
  • Highest total gross - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (£4.6 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown 21st - 23rd May 2021

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

The start of the UK re-opening has the sequel movie to Peter Rabbit hit the top with a gross that gives it over 50% of the box office total takings.

A weekend gross of £4.6 Million has the movie very comfortably at the top, and considering the current situation with the pandemic its an opening which is only about £2.5 Million below the 2018 first movie.

Nomadland

The Oscar winning film from director Chloé Zhao is at number 2 this weekend with a gross of £874,785, which is very good considering its been available on streaming for some time.

Godzilla Vs Kong

Another movie which is available on streaming is the monster bash up which is at 3 this week with a weekend gross of £783,879.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

The new movie from the Saw series is at number 4 this weekend, it stars Chris Rock in the lead role with Samuel L. Jackson along for support and it takes £779,107 on its debut.

The Unholy

Finally on this all new UK box office chart is a new horror film from director Evan Spiliotopoulos which stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan from The Walking Dead and opens its box office run with £405,391 .

Sequel movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw occupies the top spot on the US box office for a second weekend despite an almost 50% drop from last weekend while Dream Horse is the top new movie at 9 with $844,279.

Although Dream Horse was the highest new movie of the week a release release of 2020's animated Scoob! was the highest movie to appear that wasn't on last weeks chart as it had a re-entry at number 8 with $850,000.

The box office is really on the road to recovery now and but with studios waiting for the summer season to kick off properly the top 5 movie are almost static with Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon the shining movie on its 13th weekend of release.
