Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

A new movie and a new franchise launch from the Disney/Marvel crew as the kung-fu fighting Chang-Chi tops the UK box office with £5.7 Million.

This is only a slither lower than fellow Marvel movie Black Widow which debuted earlier in the year after many delays to nearly £7 Million.

The future looks promising for the movie with little in the way of high profile movies coming out in the coming weeks.

Free Guy

The sleeper hit from director Shawn Levy falls to number 2 this weekend after a trio of weeks at the top with a weekend gross of £956,248, a 41% drop.

The movie which has been on the box office for 4 weeks not has taken £13.3 Million and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

Candyman

The horror remake falls to number 3 this weekend with £754,097, a decent 32% drop over last weekend, taking the movies 2 weekend gross to £2.9 Million.

The Paw Patrol Movie

Jungle Cruise

The Disney hit adventure movie stays at number 5 this weekend with £205,762, a 46% drop from last weekend.

The movie has now taken £13.8 Million over 6 weeks of release and is the 7th top movie of 2021.

The UK box office didn't get started in 2021 until 24th May so the summer season is the first season of the year to get any results from ticket sales after the last box office chart being 25th December 2020 and Wonder Woman 1984 topping that chart.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

The top movie of the summer got off to a flying start which was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and it took £4 Million the weekend cinemas re-opened.

The sequel movie directed by Will Gluck and starring James Corden as Peter was the top movie in the country for the first weekend audiences were allowed back into cinemas and it hung around for 12 weeks and has to date taken over £20 Million.

Black Widow

The much delayed Black Widow finally got a release on 23rd July 2021 and topped the box office for 3 weeks.

The movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh was on the UK top 15 for 15 weekend and has to date grossed over £18 Million and is the second top movie of 2021.

Fast & Furious 9

The Fast Saga was back this year with Fast & Furious 9 which was released at the end of June and topped the box office for a couple of weeks.

The movie has taken over £16 Million in the UK and is the third top movie of summer 2021.

The Suicide Squad

There was a lot of hype around the James Gunn adaptation of The Suicide Squad which was released in late July and topped the box office on its release and the following weekend.

A 6 week UK box office run saw it gross £13 Million and is the fourth top in the UK over the summer of 2021.

Free Guy

A bit of a sleeper hit was the fifth top movie of the summer as Ryan Reynolds Free Guy which topped the box office in mid August for 3 weeks and has taken over £13 Million so far.

The movie is still on the box office as we go into the autumn and only got knocked off the top of the UK box office this last weekend by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The top 10 movies of Summer 2021 looks like this.

  1. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - £20 Million
  2. Black Widow - £18.6 Million
  3. Fast & Furious 9 - £16.4 Million
  4. The Suicide Squad - £13.8 Million
  5. Free Guy - £13.2 Million
  6. Space Jam: A New Legacy - £12.2 Million
  7. Jungle Cruise - £11.7 Million
  8. A Quiet Place Part II - £11.5 Million
  9. Cruella - £9.44 Million
  10. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It - £9.4 Million

The sleeper hit movie of the summer, Free Guy, kept a challenge from newcomer Candyman away with ease this weekend to remain at the top of the UK box office charts.

The horror movie retelling was the top new movie of the weekend at at number 2 while Andre Rieu's 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again concert film made an impressive new entry at number 4.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Free Guy (3rd Weekend)

  • Highest total gross - The Suicide Squad (£13.2 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 27th - 29th August 2021

Free Guy

The Ryan Reynold starring movie spends a third straight weekend at the top of the UK box office despite a challenge from the highly hyped retelling of the Candyman movie.

The video game inspired action movie took £1.6 Million on its 3rd weekend of release, again having a slim 29% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken £10.6 Million at the UK box office and has climbed to number 8 on the top movie of 2021 in the UK.

Candyman

The retelling of the 1992 movie Candyman from director Nia DaCosta makes its box office debut at number 2 this weekend with £1.1 Million.

Figures for the box office are hard to come by but the original movie made its debut with a similar figure back in March of 1993. its nearly 30 years later and the world is still in the midst of a pandemic so comparisons are unfair.

The Paw Patrol Movie

The kids TV show favourite on the bog screen falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of £563,145, a 45% drop over the previous weekend.

The movie has now taken £5.6 Million over its 3 weeks of release and is actually the 12 top movie of 2021.

Andre Rieu's 2021 Summer Concert: Together Again

The Dutch violinist known as "King of the Waltz" has a solid fan base and his cinema events concert have alway done well in the UK, especially his Christmas ones which can bring in a few million at the box office.

This latest summer concert of his makes its box office debut at number 4 this weekend with £420,056.

Jungle Cruise

Disney's action movie based on a theme park ride drops to number 5 this weekend with £402,715, 38% down on last weekend, for a 5 week total of £10.9 Million and the 7th top movie of 2021 in the UK.

It was another good weekend for Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds at the tUK box office as their comedy action movie Free Guy spends a second weekend at the top with hardly a drop on its debut gross.

Highest new movie of the weekend is People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan which brought people out to the cinema but not in the number was expected while new action movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins can only manage a number 6 debut with £542,265.

Also new on this weekends top 10 is The Night House which enters at number 9 with £315,610.

UK box office QuickView

  • NUmber 1 - Free Guy (2ns weekend)
  • Highest debut - People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan (@3)
  • Longest run - Black Widow (7 weeks)/li>
  • Highest total gross - Black Widow (£18.4 Million)

Uk box office top 5 breakdown weekend 20th - 22nd August 2021

Free Guy

Surprise hit of the summer starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer remains at the top of the UK box office for a second weekend taking £2.2 Million, a tiny 8% drop over its debut gross last weekend.

This could be contributed to the fact the UK public is starting to gain confidence going out the the cinema again, and equally it is a movie squarely aimed at the teen audience and the UK school are still out on their summer holidays.

The movie has taken £7.19 Million after 10 days of release and should be a top 10 movie of 2021 by next weekend.

The Paw Patrol Movie

Again benefitting from the school holidays the Children's TV favourite remains at number 2 for a second weekend with a gross of £1.03 Million, although showing its limited appeal it is 57% down on last weekend.

The movie has taken £4.4 Million on its 10 days of release.

People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan

The hit BBC 3 TV show about a fake reality pirate radio show from London went big screen this weekend and landed at number 3 on the UK box office with £896,992.

It was perhaps expecting to be a bit bigger in the UK as the TV show has created a lot of hype and won BAFTA's, it will probably do well until the schools go back as it has big teen appeal.

The Suicide Squad

The comic book super villain movie falls to number 4 this weekend with £653,885, a 39% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £12.3 Million and the fourth top movie of 2021.

Jungle Cruise

Rounding out the top 5 is Disney's action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt which takes £652,473, a small 23% drop thanks to the school holidays, giving the movie a total of £10 Million and the 7th top movie of 2021.
