News from around the web

This weekend, Friday 17th January 2020, there are 6 new films released in the UK looking to hit the box office, but can it challenge 1917 for the top spot?

Bombshell

Bad Boys For Life

First up at cinemas this week is Bad Boys For Life, a movie directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah who also directed Black in 2016 which grossed £1.8 Thousand in the UK.

It stars Will Smith who last starred in Spies In Disguise (2019).

The film also stars Martin Lawrence who last appeared in The Beach Bum (2019).

Bombshell

Next on this weeks new release schedule is Bombshell.

This new Dramatic movie stars Charlize Theron who's last film was The Addams Family (2019)

It also stars Nicole Kidman who appeared in The Goldfinch (2019).

The film is brought to us by veteran director Jay Roach.

The long list of new releases continues with Just Mercy which is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton who directed Short Term 12 in 2013.

It stars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx.

Weathering With You

Finally there is Weathering With You from director Makoto Shinkai who also directed Your Name in 2016, the film stars Kotaro Daigo and Nana Mori.

Check back on Monday to see where these cinema releases end up on the Weekend Box Office Chart.

Come back next week when there are 3 new releases.

  • The Personal History Of David Copperfield, Friday, 24th January
  • The Turning, Friday, 24th January
  • The Public, Friday, 24th January

As the film was already one of the most pre-book films in UK cinema history before it was released on Friday it should come as no surprise that Fifty Shades of Grey debuts at the top of the UK box office.

Taking a debut weekend gross of £13.5 million Fifty Shades has the 26 highest grossing opening weekend in the UK nesting in between The Simpsons Movie and Pirates of The Caribbean: At Worlds End.

The lasting appeal of Fifty Shades will be interesting to see as the film has been so front loaded with sales, and the mixed reviews, many being really bad, could hurt the future gross of the film.

Last weeks top film, Big Hero 6, falls just the one place this week, taking £1.8 million on it's third week of release, Big Hero 6 currently has a total gross of £9.9 million.

Nothing dares challenge Fifty Shades this week but there were a couple of other new releases on the box office: Peppa Pig The Golden Boots is at 6 and right down at 14 is Love Is Strange.
