It's been a while since there were any new releases to talk about, and there is still no UK box office as cinemas are closed during the lockdown to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

There is a new release this week in the UK on digital streaming looking to take your attention while your at home enjoying a cup of tea and biscuits and waiting for cinemas to open back up.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

  • The movie is from director Josh Greenbaum
  • It is their directorial debut.
  • It stars Kristen Wiig who last starred in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).
  • The film also stars Annie Mumolo who last appeared in Bad Moms (2016).
  • Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo appeared in Melvin Goes To Dinner (2003) together.

Next weeks there are 2 new movies also hitting home streaming.

  • Music, Monday, 15th February
  • To Olivia, Friday, 19th February

Kenneth Branagh this week scores another number one film with his take on the Agatha Christie classic Murder On The Orient Express, and in turn knock an old friend from the top of the box office.

Directed by and starring Branagh along with a whole host of other big names like Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp the film makes its debut with a respectable £4.9 million.

This already makes it his 4th most successful film as a director and by the end of its run it will be most likely 3rd with just Thor and Cinderella out doing it.

As just mentioned Branagh directed the first in the Thor series of films as by coincidence his new film knocks the latest Thor from the top spot.

Thor Ragnarok this week falls only to number 2, and it gave Murder On The Orient Express a good run for its money as it comes in with £4.6 million which brings the total gross to £20 million and its now the most successful Thor film in the UK.

Thor Ragnarok is still pulling in the audience and on a Monday to Sunday bases it would have by a long distance been the top film of the week taking in £8.1 million.

Also new this week is A Bad Moms Christmas which despite trying to celebrate Christmas in November, far too early, takes in £1.7 million at number 3.

Pokémon The Movie I Choose You and The Killing of the Sacred Deer are also new at numbers 9 and 10 respectively.

Kingsman The Golden Circle is the top total grossing movie this week with £24 million and the longest running film with 7 weeks on the chart.

Historical charts

Doctor Strange kept its hold on the box office by staying at the top while top new film was the Ben Affleck starring The Accountant.

Five years ago
Skyfall was still the top film of the week while the top new film was Silent Hill Revelation (in 3D, it was Halloween!) which entered at 3.

Ten years ago
Ratatouille spent a 4th week at the top while 30 Days of Night from director David Slade was the top new film at 2.

Fifteen years ago
Sequel movie 28 Days Later was the top new film of the week making its debut at number 1, it knocked off XXX which fell to 2 after 2 weeks on top.

Twenty years ago
The Full Monty remained at the top on its 10th weekend, although not all of them had been at the top, highest new entry was LA Confidential at number 2.

Twenty five years ago
Beauty And The Beast spent its fourth weekend at the top while the highest new film was Boomerang starring Eddie Murphy at number 2.

With very good reviews from critics, good pre launch buzz and part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe there was never any doubt that Thor: Ragnarok was going to have a huge debut at the US box office.

That debut was to the tune of $121 million which means the film starring Chris Hemsworth is the 7th biggest opening for an MCU film.

To round out the numbers its also the 17th number one film from the Disney series and the 8th which has delivered a $100 million plus opening, it beats Spiderman Homecoming from earlier this year.

With Thor out of the way last weeks halloween hit Jigsaw, as expected, falls hard this week and ends up at number 3 with $6.7 million, its total US gross now sits just below $30 million.

Also new on the US box office this week is A Bad Moms Christmas, maybe a little early for people to be thinking of the Christmas season but the film makes a very impressive debut at 2 with $17 million.

Longest running film on the US top 10 is Blade Runner 2049 which clocks up 5 weeks and with its impressive $122 million debut Thor: Ragnarok is the highest grossing movie on the chart, it has been a very slow second half to the year, until now.

It was a quiet weekend at the UK box office as top 15 total gross reaches a level not seen since December 2015 with Tom Cruises new film American Made takes the crown.

Grossing a little over 1 million pound the film had little to no competition for the top spot and takes nearly £900,000 less than last week number 1 film.

Ironically what American Made has done that Cruises last film didn't do is go to number 1, The Mummy released in early June could only manage a number 2 debut, although it did it with £3.3 million.

Of interest is this weeks full weekly breakdown, if the chart was based on Monday - Sunday figures this week chart would have been as follows: Dunkirk, The Hitmans Bodyguard, The Emoji Movie, Annabelle Creation, Despicable Me 3.

American Made is the only film this week to take over a million is takings, Dunkirk which is at number 2 this week is just shy and yet again nearly took the top spot.

The Hitmans Bodyguard fell from the top to number 3 this week with a weekend gross of just over £800,000 which is 4% drop from last week.

The films total gross after 2 weekend of play is now £4 million.

Also new this week are Logan Lucky directed by Steven Soderbergh at number 4 and Detroit starring John Boyega and directed by Kathryn Bigelow at number 7.

Dunkirk is this weeks top total grossing film with a total that is now over £50 million while Despicable Me 3 has now been on the chart for a run of 9 weeks.

Alien 3 was the top new film of the week making its debut at number 1 while Lethal Weapon 3 fell down to number 2 after a single week at the top.

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn are all present for sequel movie A Bad Moms Christmas.

The original Bad moms was a sizeable hit from a small budget so I suppose this is a no brainer.

A the title suggests its a Christmas movie and is out early November!
