News from around the web

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made it 3 weeks at the top of the UK box office as the MCU's latest hero has no challange from new releases.

The highest new movie of the week is the Polish movie Small World from director Patryk Vega which made its debut at number 10 with a weekend gross of £106,493.

Sadly with a top 15 which grossed only £5.1 Million this is the lowest total gross for the UK box office in many a week, I think this is just pent up demand for the upcoming Bond movie No Time To Die which should give cinemas a massive boost and get people back in the habit of going cinemas after the pandemic closures.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (3rd weekend)
  • Highest debut - Small World (@10)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (£15.8 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 17th - 19th September 2021.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Three weeks at the top for Disney's latest character in the MCU as the superhero movie takes £2.3 Million over the weekend, a very reasonable 34% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken £15.8 Million over its 3 weeks at the top and is the 4th top movie of 2021.

The movie has done well for a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has so far beaten Captain America: The First Avenger and is on its way to beating Iron Man and Ant-Man.

Free Guy

Starring Ryan Reynolds this has been the sleeper hit of the summer and this week the video game inspired action comedy pulls in another £676,999, only 2% down on last weekend!

The movie is still at number 2 this weekend and after 6 weeks has spent 3 weeks at the top and 3 weeks at number 2.

The movie has a UK total gross of £15.3 Million and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

Respect

Staying put at number 3 on its second weekend of release is the Aretha Franklin bio-pic which takes £377,395 over the weekend, a slim 11% drop over last weekend, the movie has grossed £1,1 Million.

Candyman

Also staying put this week, at number 4, is the horror movie sequel/retelling which takes £323,350 over the weekend, a 23% drop, giving the movie a total gross of £4.3 Million.

The Paw Patrol Movie

The children's TV favourite goes back into the top 5 this week as the animated dogs climb 1 place to number 5 this week with £263,167, a 19% drop.

This gives the movie a UK total gross of £7,613,081 and its the 13th top movie of 2021.

Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings retained the top of the box office this weekend for the third weekend in a row with Warner Bros. new Dune retelling coming in at 2.

Dune got a release in many markets this weekend, but the big markets like America, Australia, UK and China are still to come in October, it was still the highest new release on the global box office.

Chinese movie Cloudy Mountain was also new at number 3 this weekend while further down the chart Clint Eastwoods new movie Cry Macho was new at 7 with $4.8 Million and All About My Mother was new at 8 with $4.6 Million.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (3rd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Dune (@2)
  • Longest run - Raging Fire (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($320.5 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 17th - 19th September 2021

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Third weekend at the top for the latest Marvel character as the movie takes an excellent $42 Million from 44 countries, a 41% drop over last weekend.

The movie has been one of the strongest new characters for the Marvel franchise and this week its total global gross climbs to $320.5 Million.

Shang-Chi is now the 5th top movie of 2021 globally and the 3rd top Hollywood movie of the year behind Black Widow and Fast and Furious 9.

Dune

Warner Bros. release Director Denis Villeneuve telling of Frank Herbert's classic Sci-Fi novel across 24 countries this weekend and the movie makes its debut at number 2 this weekend with $36.8 Million.

The movie is getting a slow global release with much of the world getting it in October, and this could mean the film gets a long global shelf life.

Previews have happened in America and the UK for the movie and the reviews have been favourable which could make it one of the top global movies of the year, although this also happened with Villeneuve Blade Runner 2049 and that movie didn't perform as well as expected.

Cloudy Mountain

Chinese movies have done exceptionally well this year and another hit movie from the country makes its debut at number 3 this weekend with a gross of $18.6 Million from a single terretory.

Free Guy

Director Shawn Levy's video game inspired movie has done far better than expected and this weekend drops to number 4 but still takes $13.6 Million from 49 countries, a 41% drop over last weekend.

This takes the movies total global gross to $298.2 Million over its 6 weeks of release and is the 6th top movie of 2021 across the world.

The Paw Patrol Movie

">

Another movie which has done better than expected is the children's TV favourite gone to the big screen which this weekend takes $7.3 Million, only a 7% drop, from a massive 56 countries giving it a total global gross of $103.2 Million after 6 weeks of release.

Last weekend saw Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at the top of the UK box office, with 6 new releases can any of them do enough to top the box office chart this weekend?

The first trailer for the fourth The Matrix movie has hot the internet from warner brothers, and as you might have expected the trailer poses more questions about The Matrix Resurrections that it answers!

The trailer features Keanu Reeves very heavily, and as you expected he looks just like John Wick rather than Neo, but is there a reason for this, what reality is he living in and is he a washed out version of his former self?

It looks like he's been having trouble recently living in The Matrix, and when an apparent chance meeting with Carrie-Anne Moss's Trinity it looks like they don't know each other!

The red pill and the blue pill are a major feature of this trailer and it looks like Mr Thomas Anderson has been taking the blue pill of late?

Directed by Lana Wachowski goes it alone this time but it looks like the slick style of the original The Matrix back.

The movie is released December 22nd 2021 in cinemas and on HBO Max, we'd recommend this one at the cinema.
