Highest new movie of the week is the bio-pic of Aretha Franklin Respect starring Jennifer Hudson which comes in at number 3 and Conjuring director James Wan brings his new movie Malignant in at number 5.

Further down the chart Copshop is new at 7 with £198,225 on its debut and director Phyllida Lloyd's new movie Herself is new at 12 with £85,649.

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 10th - 12th September 2021

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Marvels latest superhero movie spends a second weekend at the top of the UK box office with a fantastic hold, only dropping 38% the movie takes £3.6 Million over its second weekend.

The movie has now taken an excellent £11.8 Million on the UK box office and is the 8th top movie of 2021 so far.

The movie incredibly took over £6 Million on its first full week of release in the UK.

Free Guy

The Shawn Levy action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds holds steady at number 2 this week and again has a fantastic low drop of only 28% with a weekend gross of £690,408.

This takes the movie total UK gross to £14.3 Million over 5 weeks of release and its the 4th top movie of 2021 at the UK box office.

It could potentially take Fast & Furious 9 which is currently the 3rd top movie of 2021, but then it will most likely be taken by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings by next weekend!

Highest new entry of the weekend is a bio-pic of Aretha Franklin starring Jennifer Hudson which is naturally getting a lot of Oscar hype for Hudson's performance.

The movie takes £424,514 to land at number 3 on this weeks box office.

The horror franchise movie remake falls to number 4 this weekend with £418,414, a 45% drop over last weekend, taking the movies total UK gross to £3.7 Million over 3 weeks of release.

Respected horror director of The Conjuring series brings his latest fright fest to the big screen which this weekend makes its debut at number 5 on the UK box office with £409,298.

Free Guys spends a second weekend at the top of the US box office giving director Shawn Levy his boggest hit outside the Night at the Museum series.

Making its debut at number 2 is the children's film The Paw Patrol Movie

while outside the top 5 The Protege is new at number 7 with a debut gross of just under $3 Million.

Also new this weekend is The Night House at number 8 with $2.8 Million and Reminiscence at number 9 with $2 Million.

US box office weekend top 5 breakdown 20th - 22nd August 2021

Free Guy

Spending a second weekend at the top of the US box office the Ryan Reynolds starring video game movie which takes $18.7 Million over its second weekend of release, a modest 34% drop over last weekend.

This gives director Shawn Levy his fourth biggest movie in the US with only the three Night at the Museum series ahead of it, and as were stil in the pandemic this is quite a feat.

The movie has a total US gross of $58.8 Million after 10 days of release and its now the 9th top movie of 2021.

The Paw Patrol Movie

The children's TV series turned hit movie is doing big business across the world and is impressively the runner up movie to Free Guy across many territories, and in the US makes its debut at number 2 with a gross of $13 Million.

With the US summer holidays all but over now it will rely on mothers wanting to entertain their very young children for an hour or so to take it forward, failing that a big drop could be on the cards next weekend.

Jungle Cruise

The Disney hit movie remains at number 3 this weekend with $6.2 Million, a slim 345 drop over last weekend, which gives the movie a $92.5 Million total over 4 weeks and is the 5th top movie of 2021.

Don't Breathe 2

The horror movie sequel slips to number 4 this weekend with $5 Million, a large 52% drop, which puts the movies total gross at $19.6 Million after 10 days of release.

Falling to number 5 is the Aretha Franklin bio-pic starring Jennifer Hudson which has a second weekend gross of $3.8 Million, 57% doen on last weekend, the movie has taken $15.1 Million total in the US.

Making its debut at the top of the US box office this weekend is the comedy movie starring Ryan Reynold Free Guy which open bigger than expectations.

Two other new movies enter the top 5 in the shape of Don't Breathe 2 and Respect at numbers 2 and 4 respectively.

US box office Quickview

  • Number 1 - Free Guy (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Free Guy (@1)
  • Longest run - Fast & Furious 9 (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Black Widow ($178.1 Million)

UK box office top 5 breakdown weekend 13th - 15th August 2021

Free Guy

Another movie delayed due to the pandemic is the latest comedy from maverick director Shawn Levy which makes its US box office debut at number 1 with a weekend gross of $28.4 Million.

The director pumped out a lot of movies in the early 2000 and 2010's but this is his first movie since 2014, but getting Ryan Reynolds to star has turned it into a hit.

Ryan Reynolds himself was in The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard from earlier this year which didn't quite hit the right note with audiences and ended its US run with nearly $40 Million.

Don't Breathe 2

Sequel to 2016's Don't Breathe the movie brings back Stephen Lang as the Blind Man and enters the US box office at number 2 with $10 Million.

Jungle Cruise

Disney's themepark ride based movie falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of $9 Million, a 43% drop over last weekend.

The movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt has now taken $82.1 Million in the US over 3 weeks and is the 6th top movie for 2021.

Making its debut at number 4 is the bio-pic movie of Aretha Franklin starring what I'm sure will be an Oscar winning turn from Jennifer Hudson as the late singer, the movie takes $8.8 Million over the weekend.

The Suicide Squad

A hard fall from the top to number 5 for the comic book supervillain movie which takes $7.7 Million on its second weekend of release, a very large 71% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken $42.8 Million total over the 2 weeks of release.

A new trailer for the upcoming film star Trek has hit the web today, and finally this is the trailer I've been wanting to see, I'm now convinced that this is going to be a great film.

It's been worrying me ever since I heard that JJ Abrams was going to re-image Star Trek that he was somehow going to change things, a little tweak is OK, but change things, Star Trek has a rich history behind it and you just have to respect that history.

I'm a big Star Trek fan, The Next Generation is my personal favourite but the Original Series is great and if it hadn't been for that we'd never have had the afore mentioned series, so I love it for the history. The first trailer for the new film did nothing to convince me that this was going to be a good Star Trek film, a good sci-fi film maybe, but this is Star Trek.

Now things have changed, the new trailer has hit the web and I'm convinced now that this is not only a film to look forward to, but it will be a good Star Trek film. If Abrams can inject the same pasion into the full film as spills over in this trailer then we've got a good addition to the Star Trek franchise on our hands, and who knows it may even revive the virtually dead series.

I won't go on any long head over to Apple for the full HD glory.
