Uk box office top 5 breakdown weekend 31st December 2021 - 2nd January 2022

Spider Man: No Way Home

Three weeks at the top now for the third in the MCU Spider-Man films which takes a quite staggering £6 Million on its 3rd weekend of release, a 24% increase over last weekend, but cinemas were closed for a day the previous week.

The movie is easily the second top movie if 2021 having taken £69.8 Million to date, it sits behind the Bond movie No Time To Die at year end, but the movie will in the long run most likely beat it.

The King's Man

Highest new movie of the weekend is the Matthew Vaughn prequel movie to the directors The Kingsmen movies.

The movie takes a very reasonable £3.49 Million over its debut weekend.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

The movie about the large red dog remains at number 3 this weekend with a gross of £778,802, a large 55% increase over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £5.9 Million after 4 weeks.

The Matrix Resurrections

The fourth in The Matrix saga falls to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £760,427, a huge 75% from last weekend, not a good sign for the Warner Bros. well hyped movie.

The films has a total gross of £5.2 Million over its 2 weekends of release, not that good, something has not quite hit home with this movie and it looks like its going to be a big flop.

West Side Story

Celebrated director Steven Spielberg's retelling of the classic stage show falls to number 5 this weekend with a gross of £397,792, a 47% increase over last week, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £5 Million after 4 weeks.

Maverick director Steven Spielberg releases his much anticipated, and much delayed, remake of West Side Story which should have been an easy number 1 movie but it was released the same weekend as children's favourite Clifford the Big Red Dog and and the two had a mighty battle for the top spot!

Also new this week is a re-entry for the Christmas favourite Home Alone which gets another holiday release this year and enters at number 7 this week with £122,299.

The movie which is baed on the 1957 Broadway show of the same name takes £1.297 Million over the weekend.

The movie had a tight fight with Clifford the Big Red Dog and in the end there was less than half a million pound separating them.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Landing at 2 this week is the children's classic animated TV show which here gets the big screen treatment with a large CGI dog.

The movie is directed by Walt Becker and stars Britains own Jack Whitehall, it took £1.293 Million over its debut weekend.

After a long delay hitting North American cinemas Steven Spielberg's remake of the classic West Side Story its the top of the box office on its debut weekend.

With such a strong new release there was little other new movies hitting the top 10 this weekend, National Champions from director Ric Roman Waugh made its debut at 13 with a weekend gross of $300,000.

Spielberg's version makes its debut with a weekend gross of $10.5 Million.

Encanto

The Disney animated movie falls to number 2 this weekend after a 2 weekend spell at the top with a gross of $9.4 Million, a very small 25% drop over last weekend.

This gives the movie a total gross after 3 weeks of $71.3 Million.

Ghostbuster: Afterlife

The Ghostbusters sequel sits on the top 5 for a 4th weekend, this week slipping to number 3 with a gross of $7.1 Million, a slim 31% drop over last weekend.

The movie has taken a fairly respectable $112 Million over its 4 weeks on release and is the 10th top grossing movie of 2021.

Director Ridley Scott's true life family drama falls to number 4 this weekend with $4.06 Million, a 40% drop over last weekened, giving the movie a total US gross of $41 Million after 3 weeks of release.

All eyes were on the much delayed return of Maverick director Steven Spielberg who's retelling of the classic West Side Story made its debut this week, but Disney's Encanto managed a very strong 3rd weekend to beat off the competition.

Meanwhile French comedy Les Tuche 4 from writer director Olivier Baroux made its debut at number 10 with $5.3 Million, an impressive feat considering its only released in France.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Encanto (3rd Weekend)
  • Highest debut - West Side Story (@2)

  • highest total gross - Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($493.3 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 10th - 12th December 2021

Encanto

Three weeks at the top of the global box office for Disney's latest animated feature which take $23 Million over the weekend from 64 countries, a slim 31% drop over last weekend.

The movie easily beat the new release challenge from West Side Story and has a current total gross of $151.8 Million globally.

West Side Story~2020

The new movie from Maverick director Steven Spielberg has been delayed by a year but its his first movie as director since 2018's Ready Player One.

His adaptation of the classic 1957 broadway show, and later adapted into a classic movie in 1961 directed by Robert Wise lands on the global box office at number 2 this week with $13.5 Million from 54 countries.

Although the movie got beaten by Disneys Encanto it is still to go as wide, although the top spot will be unachievable as Spide-Man: No Way Home gets its long awaited release this week and there is little change of this beating such a highly anticipated movie.

Schemes In Antiques

The Chinese only release from director Chi-Kin Kwok drops to number 3 this weekend with $14.6 Million, a 42% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken an impressive $51.6 Million over its 2 weekends of release.
