News from around the web

The 2021 version of the classic sci-fi noval Dune directed by Denis Villeneuve tops the UK box office this weekend on its debut.

Also new on the top 5 this weekend is the animated movie The Boss Baby 2: Family Business which makes its debut at number 4.

Outside the top 5 there is a new release for the new movie from celebrated director Wes Anderson, The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun which enters at 6 with £867,672 while musical Dear Evan Hansen is new at 9 with £236,396.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - Dune (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut - Dune (@1)
  • Longest run - The Paw Patrol Movie (11 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£78 Million)
  • UK box office weekend top 5 breakdown 22nd - 24th October 2021

    Dune

Director Denis Villeneuve brings his vision of the classic Frank Herbert sci-fi noval to the big screen after a delay of a year and hit the top, de-throning Bond in the process.

The movie takes a very respectable £5.8 Million in the UK on its debut, which compared to movie this year since cinemas re-opened is good with only No Time To Die doing better, as you would expect.

The movie has potential limited appeal altohugh David Lynches 1984 version of the movie has created a large audience over the nearly 40 years since release who will be keen to see this version, but No Time To Die could reclaim the top for a weekend before the release of Eternals on 5th November.

    No Time To Die

The 25th Bond movie spent 3 weeks at the top before being taken by Dune and this week is at number 2 with a weekend gross of £4.6 Million, a 44% drop over last weekend.

The movie has certainly brought people back to the cinema and has taken a massive £78 Million to date and has sold over 12.5 Million cinema tickets.

The movie is by far the top movie of 2021 in the UK, and I doubt Eternals or Spider-Man: No Way Home will overtake it and I think The Matrix Resurrections

is released too late in the year.

It is also the 8th top movie of all time in the UK and will most likely enter the top 5 by next weekend.

    Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The superhero villain movie falls to number 3 this weekend with £2.4 Million on its second weekend of release, a 60% drop over last week.

This gives the film a total UK gross of £11.1 Million after 10 days, which puts it just behind 2018's Venom.

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

The animated sequel makes its debut at number 4 this weekend with a gross of £1.2 Million, which is way behind the orinal The Boss Baby from 2017.

That movie, which was released in the April of 2017, had a number 1 debut with £8 Million, but after some delays, and little interest in the franchise the sequel has done a fraction of that.

    The Addams Family 2

The animated sequel to the much loved TV series falls to number 5 this weekend with £885,404, a small 36% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £5.2 Million.

With no surprise the 25th Bond movie No Time To Die spends a second weekend at the top of the UK box office increasing its UK gross to over £50 Million in 10 days of release.

Coming in second this weekend and making its UK debut is the animated sequel feature The Addams Family 2 while also new this weekend is the horror movie Deadly Cuts at 9 with £s;51,195.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - No Time to Die (2nd weekend)
  • Highest debut - The Addams Family 2 (@2)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age (12 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time to Die (£52.6 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th October 2021

No Time To Die

No surprises at all that the 25th Bond movie, and Daniel Craigs last, is still at the top on its second weekend, in fact no studio has released anything that could even challenge the movie, that comes next weekend.

The movie takes £15.2 Million on its second weekend which is a resonable 41% drop over its debut, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £52.6 Million.

It's confusing looking at how this compares with other Daniel Craig Bond movies, its not as good as SPECTRE, but in reality that movie had been out for 14 days by this point, its about the same as Skyfall but that movies wasn't released during a pandemic that closed cinemas for nearly 6 months, but its far better than Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale, one thing is for certain, the Daniel Craig era has been the most successful.

The movie is by far the top film of 2021 in the UK.

The Addams Family 2

A sequel to the 2019 animated hit The Addams Family was always going to happen, and after a difficult year for cinema the sequel movie makes its debut at number 2 this weekend.

The movie takes a reasonable £2 Million on its debut, which is very similar to the originals debut at the same time of year in 2019.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Marvels smash hit movie falls to number 3 this weekend with a gross of £558,407, a slim 28% drop considering the movie is on its 6th weekend of release.

The total UK gross for the film sits at £20.5 Million, the second highest grossing movie of 2021 in the UK.

Marvel are set to have another good year at the box office after having no new movies for over a year, Black Widow did well a few months ago, and flowing this will be Eternals in a few weeks and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December both of which are setting themselves up to be massive holiday movies.

The Paw Patrol Movie

The animated kids film continues to do well at the box office and this weekend stays put at number 4 with £125,902, a 50% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total UK gross of £8.3 Million over 9 weeks of release.

The Many Saints of Newark

The prequel movie to The Sopranos stays put at number 5 this weekend with £125,404, a 47% drop, giving the movie a UK total of £1.8 Million after 3 weeks.

The new Bond movie No Time To Die has climbed to number 1 on its second weekend of release replacing last weeks top movie The Battle at Lake Changjin.

With the Bond movie spreading to even movie countries this weekend and no big new releases there were no new movies on the top 10 global box office.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - No Time To Die (1st week)
  • Highest debut - There were no new movies this weekend
  • Longest run - The Paw Patrol Movie (9 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($401 Million)

Global box office top 5 weekend breakdown 8th - 10th October 2021.

No Time To Die

The 25th Bond movie goes wider this week with a release in countries like America where it made its debut at the top, and hit the top of the global box office with a weekend gross of $145.5 Million from 67 countries, an 18% increase from last weekend.

The movie has turned into one of the biggest Bond movie of all time and to far has taken $313.2 Million, and its the 8th top movie of 2021 globally.

The Battle At Lake Changjin

The Chinese hit movie falls from the top to number 2 this weekend with a gross 53% lower than last weekend at $108.3 Million, the movie is still only released in China.

This pushes the movie total gross to $632 Million and its the 4th top movie of 2021 globally.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The Venom sequel remains at number 3 this weekend with $56.8 Million from 14 countries, a 45% drop, giving the movie a total global gross of $185.5 Million after 2 weeks.

My Country, My Parents

Remaining at number 4 this weekend is the second hit Chinese of the weekend with $19 Million from 3 countries, a massive 78% drop, this gives the movie a total global gross of $181.8 Million after 2 weeks.

The Addams Family 2

The sequel animated movie stays at number 5 this weekend with $14.5 Million from 13 countries, a 19% drop, giving the movie a total of $35.7 after 2 weeks.

Anticipation was high for the much delayed 25th Bond movie, and the opening weekend gross didn't disappoint and it took most of this weekends box office and produced the highest weekend take since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

There was one other new release on the UK box office this weekend, Indian threequel movie Chal Mera Putt 3 made its debut at number 6 with £192,957.

UK box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - No Time To Die (1st weekend)
  • Highest debut - No Time To Die (@1)
  • Longest run - The Croods: A New Age and Space Jam: A New Legacy (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - No Time To Die (£25.9 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 1st - 3rd October 2021

No Time To Die

It was always going to be a big first weekend for the much delayed 25th James Bond movie, and the last starring Daniel Craig, but there is a suggestion that it actually beat expectation as the movie makes its UK debut with £25.9 Million.

This 3 day (Friday - Sunday) gross is bigger than both Skyfall and SPECTRE (although SPECTRE officially had a 7 day opening of over £40 Million).

The movie has instantly become the top movie of 2021 in the UK beating the £20 Million of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

It's also worth noting that the success and pent up anticipation for this movie effected the rest of the box office quite negatively as the movie took 91% of all money spent at the box office this weekend, meaning that (less than) 1 in every 10 tickets sold was NOT for this movie.

This will certainly get people back in the habbit of going to the cinema again and unlike when Warner release Tenet this time last year, people are ready to go back to cinemas now.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

After 4 weeks at the top it is perhaps time for the Marvel superhero to give up the top spot, and as the top movie and this are attracting a similar audience this has suffered quite a bit as the movie take £779,077, a drop of 50% over last weekend.

This gives the movie a 5 week total of £19.6 Million and its the 3rd top movie of 2021 in the UK.

Free Guy

The Ryan Reynolds starring smash hit comedy action movie sits tight at number 3 this weekend with £270,266, a 51% drop, and its largest since relese.

This gives the movie a total gross of £16.5 Million after 8 weeks of release and its the 5th top movie of 2021.

The Paw Patrol Movie

The kids favourite dogs climb back up the box office from number 7 to number 4 this weekend with a gross of £251,511, an incredible 15% increase over last weekend.

The movie has now taken £8.1 Million over 8 weeks of release.

The Many Saints of Newark

Falling hard this weekend is the prequel movie to The Sopranos which takes £237,150 on its second weekend, a massive 75% drop over last weekend, this gives the movie a total UK gross of £1.5 Million.

This weekend might go down in history as the weekend where cinema across the globe came back to life after the pandemic as globally there were 5 massive new releases which out performed expectations and created an all new box office top 5.

At the top is the Chinese movie The Battle At Lake Changjin which was only released in China and yet out grossed all in its path, then there was the new Bond movie No Time To Die which is the second top movie of the weekend.

The North American champion Venom: Let There Be Carnage makes its debut at three, while the Chinese movie My Country, My Parents is at 4 and finally The Addams Family 2 is new at 5.

Last weeks top movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings falls to number 6 this weekend.

Global box office QuickView

  • Number 1 - The Battle At Lake Changjin (1st Weekend)
  • Highest debut = The Battle At Lake Changjin (@1)
  • Longest run - The Paw Patrol Movie (8 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($386.9 Million)

Global box office top 5 breakdown 1st - 3rd October 2021.

The Battle At Lake Changjin

Released only in China the highly anticipated war movie starring Jing Wu and directed by Kaige Chen, Dante Lam and Hark Tsui takes 40% of this weeks global top 10 with a debut gross of $232.9 Million.

This is one of the biggest debut weekends in China and is a real sign that the Chinese public are going back to the movies, it out preforms No Time To Die by over $100 Million.

Very impressively the movie is already the 8th top movie globally of 2021.

No Time To Die

The long delayed 25th James Bond movie finally makes its debut and lands at number 2 on the global box office with a very impressive $119.1 Million from 54 locations.

The movie is still to open in many bog markets including North America and China, so this is just the start of its long box office run helping to bring people back to cinemas.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Getting a release in just 2 territories this week the superhero villain movie from the Spider-Man universe lands on the global box office at 3 with $103 Million.

$90 Million of this was in North America where is landed at number 1, the movie is still to be released in most of the world but the sequel movie has made an impressive start.

My Country, My Parents

Another movie which has only been released in China this weekend the threequel has been over shadowed by the number 1 movie The Battle At Lake Changjin but still gets an impressive debut at number 4 with $90.6 Million.

The Addams Family 2

Completing an all new top 5 the sequel animated movie, like most of this weeks top 5, is only released in 1 country and land at 5 with $18 Million.
