UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 28th - 30th January 2022

Sing 2

The animated sequel to director Garth Jennings 2017 original Sing lands on this weeks box office at the top with a gross £6.8 Million.

This is lower than the first movies debut gross which was £10 Million, but that is most likely down to the pandemic as we are still seeing lower box office returns on the whole.

The movie has been a smash hit across the globe and in the UK the original was a smash hit, this will hang around for quite a while, it is already the second top movie of 2022 in the UK.

Belfast

Kenneth Branagh's movie never made it to the top spot in the UK but it is proving to be a big hit regardless as it spends another weekend at number 2.

The film takes £1.8 Million over the weekend pushing its total to £6 Million, and making it the 3rd top movie of 2022.

Spider Man: No Way Home

The movie spent 6 weeks at number 1 over the 2021 Christmas and new year period but this week leaps over Belfast to number 3 as it looses the number 1 crown to Sing 2.

On its 7th weekend the movie takes £1.7 Million, a 24% drop over last week, giving it a total UK gross of £90 Million.

It is the top movie of 2022 and is the 6th top movie of all time as it tries to beat the £93 Million taken by Avatar.

Scream

Falling to number 4 this weekend is the horror franchise movie which takes £788,123 on its 3rd weekend of release, a 37% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total in the UK of £6.1 Million.

Nightmare Alley

Falling to 5 this weekend after its debut is the Guillermo del Toro directed movie which takes £330,830, a 40% drop from last week, giving the movie a total in the UK of £1,2 Million.

The movie could end up being one of the famed directors lowest grossing films in the UK.

This weekend at the global box office Spider-Man: No Way Home spent its 7th weekend at the top as its total global gross gets closer to the $2 Billion mark.

The highest new movie of the week was the sequel Chinese film The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure which landed at 9 with $3 Million on its debut.

Global box office top 5 breakdown weekend 28th - 30th January 2022

Spider Man: No Way Home

Seven weeks in now for the multiverse Spider-Man movie as it starts to challenge the global box office to be the top grossing movie of all time, an honour currently held by Avatar which has taken $2.8 Billion since its release in 2009.

The movie has still to be released in China which is currently still unset and its unknown if a release will happen.

This weekend the movie takes another $32.1 Million from 64 countries which pushes the movies total to $1.7 Million, so it still has a long way to go before it even goes over the $2 Billion mark, but it is achievable.

Its quite an achievement that the movie still only has a 23% drop over last weekend, meaning that people are most likely seeing the film multiple times.

The movie is naturally the top movie of 2022 and its gross is getting to the point where it may be hard to beat with $370.9 Million taken this year.

Sing 2

The animated sequel is proving to be a massive hit just like its prequel Sing from 2017 as the movie takes $22,2 Million in second place where it jumped back to this week, this is an amazing 17% increase over last weekend and the movie is released in 63 countries.

The movie is edging towards the $300 Million mark as this weeks its total gross hits $267.9 Million after 6 weeks of release.

This places the movie as the second top film of 2022 globally.

Scream

The horror movie sequel falls to number 3 this week as it starts its decent down the box office with a weekend gross of $13.8 Million from 56 countries, a 39% drop over last weekend, giving the movie a total gross of $106.2 Million after 3 weeks.

Also making its debut this weekend is Nightmare Alley from director Guillermo del Toro which came in at 4 while the Denzel Washington directed A Journal For Jordan is new at 14 with £50,511.

  • Highest debut - Belfast (@2)
  • Longest run - Ghostbusters: Afterlife (10 weeks)
  • Highest total gross - Spider-Man: No Way Home (£87.4 Million)

UK box office top 5 weekend breakdown 21st - 23rd January 2022.

Spider Man: No Way Home

6 weeks at the top now for the Marvel and Sony web slinger as the mega smash movie starring Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch takes £2.3 Million over its 6th weekend of release, a good 27% drop over last weekend.

The movie has now taken an amazing £87.4 Million total in the UK, and it is the top movie of 2022 with £17.6 Million taken this year.

It is also the second top movie released in 2021 with only No Time To Die having taken more and to top it all off it is the 7th top movie of all time in the UK.

There is every possibility that the movie could stay at the top of another weekend, although with the release of animated sequel Sing 2 on Friday it has its work cut out, and this weeks top new movie Belfast is pulling in the audiences as word of mouth is hyping the film.

Belfast

Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Caitriona Balfe and Judi Dench this Irish movie is the highest debut of the weekend with £2.3 Million.

The movie actually topped the Irish and Scottish box office this week doing better than Spider-Man: No Way Home in those territories, but when combined it has to make do with a very strong number 2 debut.

With this successful UK launch the movie is the 5th top movie of 2022.

It has its work cut out, but the mid week chart has the movie as the top film of the week.

Scream

After making its debut at number 2 last week the movie drops to number 3 on its sophomore weekend with a take of £1.2 Million, a large 49% drop.

The movie has now taken £4.7 Million in total and is the 2nd top movie of 2022 so far.

Nightmare Alley

Horror master Guillermo del Toro brings his latest movie to the big screen in the shape of a drama starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett which makes its debut with £550,868.

The movie has got good reviews and word of mouth but seems to have not made an impact on the movies box office showing and which could result in the film disappearing in a short amount of time.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Seven weeks on now for the live action version of the animated series as the movie drops to number 5 with £389,508, a low 38% drop over last weekend.

This gives the film a total UK gross of £4.1 Million, it is now the 4th top movie of 2022 with £2.5 Million of that taken this year.

A lack of big new releases over the last few weeks has worked well for Spider-Man: No Way Home as its spends an amazing 6th weekend at the top of the global box office.

The top new movie of the weekend enters at number 6 as Nightmare Alley gets released in 18 countries with a $4.6 Million debut.

Global box office QuickView
