A movie sequel or prequel is a film that is connected to a previous movie and either continues the story from the original film (sequel) or tells the story that occurred before the events of the original film (prequel).

A movie series, on the other hand, refers to a collection of films that are connected through their shared characters, setting, or themes. These films often build on the events of the previous films and tell a larger story across multiple installments.

While a sequel or prequel can also be part of a movie series, they are typically more self-contained and can be viewed and enjoyed on their own. A movie series, on the other hand, requires viewing all of the films in order to fully understand and appreciate the story being told.

For example, "Star Wars a New Hope" is the first film in the "Star Wars" movie series, while "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" is a sequel to that film, continuing the story of the characters introduced in the first film. "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" on the other hand is a prequel to the original "Star Wars" film, telling the story that occurred before the events of the first movie.
